What is Included

This update adds Control-IQ technology to your t:slim X2 insulin pump. Control-IQ technology is designed to help increase time in range (70-180 mg/dL)* using Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)^† values to predict glucose levels 30 minutes ahead and adjust insulin.

Before You Begin

This update requires a prescription and completion of online training, which must be initiated through the customer portal in order to receive the Update ID Code needed to update your pump software. If you have not yet requested your update, visit the portal to begin the process.

Three Simple Steps to Update

Get Ready to Update

You must have completed the prescription process mentioned above and have received your Update ID Code to proceed.

Please consult the Tandem Device Updater User Guide and have the following:

A convenient time to stop all insulin delivery, detach your infusion set, and remove your cartridge. This update will take 15 to 30 minutes.
Your unique Update ID Code, which you should receive by email once we have received your prescription (if required) and you've completed your online training. This code expires 60 days from email receipt.
The pump serial number (contained in the email with the Update ID Code)
Compatible computer with an internet connection (ethernet is preferred)
A backup insulin delivery option, such as a syringe and long-acting insulin, in case there are any issues updating your pump
Your blood glucose (BG) meter so that you can check your BG prior to starting the software update
Supplies to change your cartridge. We recommend performing the update when you are ready for a new cartridge.

Note: Control-IQ technology only works with the Dexcom G6 CGM. If you are still using Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM and have Dexcom G5 supplies you plan to use, we recommend postponing this update until you are ready to switch to the new Dexcom G6 system. If you are already using Dexcom G6 CGM and have an active sensor session when you update your pump, you will need to start the session again on your pump after the update is complete. The update process will NOT stop the sensor session, and you will not need to re-enter your transmitter ID. When your pump asks if you have a sensor code, tap SKIP. Your pump should backfill any data missed during the update. You can continue to view your Dexcom G6 CGM data on the Dexcom mobile app during the update process.

Install Tandem Device Updater

The program should automatically start once installation is complete. If it does not start automatically, locate the icon on your computer’s desktop, in the program folder (PC) or in the applications folder (Mac).

Update Your Pump

Follow the prompts to update your t:slim X2 insulin pump. The process should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Note: If the Tandem Device Updater encounters a condition that will not allow you to continue, you will see an error message on your computer screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the error and continue with your update. If you are unable to continue with your update, contact Customer Support at (877) 801-6901. Reference the Troubleshooting section of the Tandem Device Updater User Guide, if you have trouble connecting your pump or starting an update.

Tandem Device Updater is a program that runs on your desktop computer and allows you to update your pump software. If the software installed on your computer is older than version 5.4, you will need to download and install the new software version.

System Requirements

You will need administrator rights to install Tandem Device Updater on your laptop or desktop computer, along with an internet connection. Please review all requirements.

Responsible Use of Control‑IQ Technology

Even with advanced systems such as the t:slim X2 insulin pump with Control-IQ technology, users are still responsible for actively managing their diabetes. Control-IQ technology does not prevent all high and low blood glucose events. The system is designed to help reduce glucose variability, but it requires that users accurately input information, such as meals and periods of sleep or exercise. Control-IQ technology will not function as intended unless all system components, including CGM, infusion sets and pump cartridges, are used as instructed. Importantly, the system cannot adjust insulin dosing if the pump is not receiving CGM readings. Because there are situations and emergencies that the system may not be capable of identifying or addressing, users should always pay attention to their symptoms and treat accordingly.

Important Safety Information

RX ONLY. The t:slim X2 pump and Control-IQ technology are intended for single patient use. The t:slim X2 pump and Control-IQ technology are indicated for use with U-100 insulin only. t:slim X2 insulin pump: The t:slim X2 insulin pump with interoperable technology is an alternate controller enabled (ACE) pump that is intended for the subcutaneous delivery of insulin, at set and variable rates, for the management of diabetes mellitus in people requiring insulin. The pump is able to reliably and securely communicate with compatible, digitally connected devices, including automated insulin dosing software, to receive, execute, and confirm commands from these devices. The t:slim X2 pump is indicated for use in individuals six years of age and greater. Control-IQ technology: Control-IQ technology is intended for use with a compatible integrated continuous glucose monitor (iCGM, sold separately) and ACE pump to automatically increase, decrease, and suspend delivery of basal insulin based on iCGM readings and predicted glucose values. It can also deliver correction boluses when the glucose value is predicted to exceed a predefined threshold. Control-IQ technology is intended for the management of Type 1 diabetes mellitus in persons six years of age and greater.

Warning: Control-IQ technology should not be used by anyone under the age of six years old. It should also not be used in patients who require less than 10 units of insulin per day or who weigh less than 55 pounds.

Control-IQ technology is not indicated for use in pregnant women, people on dialysis, or critically ill patients. Do not use Control-IQ technology if using hydroxyurea. Users of the t:slim X2 pump and Control-IQ technology must: use the insulin pump, CGM, and all other system components in accordance with their respective instructions for use; test blood glucose levels as recommended by their healthcare provider; demonstrate adequate carb-counting skills; maintain sufficient diabetes self-care skills; see healthcare provider(s) regularly; and have adequate vision and/or hearing to recognize all functions of the pump, including alerts, alarms, and reminders.
